“Shut up and …….!”

How many words can you think of to complete the refrain, ‘shut up and …,’  BTW the free Dictionary says that a refrain is a phrase or verse recurring at intervals in a song or poem, at the end of each stanza; chorus.

Many Americans have learned to connect this phrase with intolerance, disrespect, rudeness, bigotry, or misanthropy.  Used by a top-pay journalist during a prime time show on Fox, it reflects and promotes the supremacist mentality of telling others ‘you’re not smart enough to have an opinion.’  In her diatribe against public opinion, Ms. Ingraham has met the standard for those who use the refrain to overpower others.  Watch how she starts out with a “dumb jock” satirical remark.  The men who play professional sports according to this remark are not smart enough to think for themselves on political matters.  Most likely, she thinks the same of everyone else except people like herself.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJlA2lkpXswcheap journalism

Instead of trying to figure out ways of coming together to make America better, it seems that Fox News resorts to making commentaries of the sort against citizens’ rights so that they don’t have to pay real journalist for real news.  Isn’t it a first amendment right to say what you think? My advise to Ms. Ingraham is to get a real job and learn some  people skills.  We know Lebron is a formidable and skilled athlete.  Seems like she’s where she’s at for satirical empty babbling inspired by hate, but it’s likely that she didn’t come up with the idea herself.   To feed their conservative right agenda at the lowest possible cost, would-be journalists turned repeaters of what others say make a million dollar gain on pushing hate.  Why, media mogul owner of Fox, Murdoch et al, is not honest enough to operate a news reporting outlet in good ole Britain, but he is in the U.S.

Seems to me, Ms. Ingraham has been playing the game of subverting America all along.  Please journalists, be responsible and step up your game, work for a living, go out and get the story that will make a difference, contribute to build-up instead of tearing down people and their first amendment rights. That’s how you can help to make America better. Step up your game!



March for Our Children’s Lives – Control Guns

Today on ABC, I listened to students talk about the March on the 24 and how the NRA and the politicians on both sides of the coin have blood on their hands. I agree. But I would add to that saying that Hollywood is also to blame as is every news-reporting agency in the nation who keeps sustaining and raising the bar on violence through mass communication outlets.   So, I believe these students are only addressing one of the major culprits by looking at the most obvious, the sellers and makers of the profitable 300 billion-dollar industry of this country, as well as the gate keepers of the nation, the congressmen and women who make the laws that fail to conserve and preserve the safety of their constituents.  Of course, there is no water that will ever wash away their responsibility unless that of reprobation of their own laws that neglect to safeguard the well being of civilians.

The day politicians gather students, parents, and teachers in a conversation of mutual understanding, education will serve to make a better American future; and the abuse, neglect, and condoning of violence on ourselves and the world will be our next new normal.  In the new normal, even the news stories will change for the best, and our focus will not be on violence.  Since the beginning of mass communication media, violence, crime, hate, sexual aberration, and other oddities have been the number one best sellers at the movies, the nightly news, and other media reports.  One generation after another, we have been raising the bar on violence. When are we going to wake up?

Japan leads the way in gun control laws. Follow their example. Let’s focus on positive news, find ways to entertain without violence, crime, and sex.  Only then will we become a progressive and evolved species.  Otherwise, we will only keep on killing and hurting one another for power.  Why do you think these gunmen open fire?  Power, because they can. We put the guns in their hands. Education Reform Calls When Schools Fail to Educate The Whole Child

The recent school shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine’s Day, 2018 happened in my back yard, less than a hundred miles away.  But it doesn’t surprise me; it’s not a rude awakening.  I pretty much expected something like that to happen any time anywhere.  Copy-catters are probably on the go right now buying assault weapons and grenades, after all, the law says they can; it’s the American way.  ‘Shoot then ask’ and  ‘better safe than sorry’ are just two of the axioms of the American culture’s building blocks acquired during Homesteaders days.  Back then, there weren’t any long range rifles, grenades or semi-automatics, no video games to blame.  It was survival tactics. But today, 21st Century mass shootings in schools don’t avail us much credit on social order but are telling us another story.  A story of neglect and the commercialization of public education.

Today, when education has been mandatory since the 70s decade and you can’t even get your driver’s license in many States if you’re under 18 and not enrolled in school, we have no choice but to look at the role schools play in the adaptation of individuals to society.  Why are American schools failing to produce socially well-rounded individuals? This is not an isolated case. It’s the product of the education system.  News outlets are raging right now about the measures that should be and need to be taken to avoid such incidents. The media will be disaster happy for days on end now interviewing survivors to get their story and school superintendency officials will be on call 24/7. But NO ONE will have the courage, the compassion, or the vision to address the REAL problems schools face today.

First of all, high schools with over 3 thousand students are an aberration of lofty and equitable education goals.  In order to cut costs, the education system houses (doesn’t educate but holds) larger and larger numbers of students in one huge anonymous place called a high school, middle schools are next in line.  Elementary schools for the most part remain small and have a tighter grasp on students’ identity which is lost to anonymity at grade 6.    Ask any of the surviving students at Marjorie’s high school who she was and what her contributions to society were; you will find that less than 1 percent can tell you. In these large houses students are forced to act, think, speak, dress, and perform according to a set pattern dictated by mass media in order to be popular, cool and accepted by the vast majority of hypnotized teens consuming the latest gadget.  On the other hand, the school’s walls engulf the neophytes every morning submitting them first to a free plastic breakfasts they don’t eat, and expects them to follow strict rules of conduct and produce high standards of performance on tests neither they nor their teachers have any power over for the remainder of the anonymous day.

During their day, students don’t connect with subject matter, they can’t, the bell rings every 50 minutes or so and they’re up and off their feet running through the nearest door delivering their half written teen coded text to another anonymous already in the hallway slam-dunking one another or yelling at the top of their lungs for no one to hear.  School monitors stand by and cameras roll. Inside bathrooms, you don’t wan to go. Pretty soon, between one text and another, one talking-talking–non-stop-talking anonymous teacher and another, lunch time arrives and they sit to chit chat the latest gossip while all the while clicking on whatever grunge comes up from the cosmos of digital cool marketing, sexual content and crime laughing on the Web. Then, it’s jut another hour or so where they’ll doze off their pre-packaged pizza or rumbling stomach and peer through the haze at the surreal situation they’re in, disconnected, anonymous, unaware, another day will pass and another until finally they either make it or not.  Then what?

If superintendents and the departments of education in every state really wanted to educate each student, the first thing they NEED to do is talk to teachers.  TEACHERS know what the ailments are and have ideas of their own on how to solve the problems.  Listen to their needs, meet their needs, educate them for free, pay them competitive professional salaries, reduce the number of students that a school should responsibly hold, and stop putting standardized assessments with little real-life applications at the forefront of education.  Making those who can’t achieve the standard feel inferior and stressed over the outcome of a test is a murderous attempt against individuality.  Talented students come in all kinds of intelligences. Don’t you know that the first type of intelligence you must access before learning is that of emotional well-being? GOOGLE GOLDMAN IF YOU DON’T.

Double the number of teachers employed, give the meaning of small group teaching and learning validity. Stop abusing children and teachers in the public education system.  Just this year I took an early retirement because I WILL NOT  submit myself to the abuse and INCOMPETENCE of school districts.  I can tell you horror stories that will have you bashing school principals and district offices to the polls for reform.  REFORM the education system to be a more compassionate, whole-child, less commercialized one, spend the money in your future, the child, instead of 30 million dollar software programs.

There have been 18 school shootings since January 1, 2018. What are we waiting for? More monitors are not going to fill the gap between the schools agenda and the social depravation of society in an anonymous society.

National Screenwriters Day

It is only befitting to pay tribute to the day by sharing the last edit on a short  I took up inspired by Aaron Sorkin’s master class. Then I found out that the assignment was to write a play on a public domain short story.  That was one time when it was most beneficial not to read directions thoroughly.  This script is for a music video and I hope you guys can make up the beat that goes with the lyrics here written, which are not mine but the artist’s.

It’s only 9 or ten pages long, and because the lyrics are written in, you can skip the lyrics if you want and just read the action and the dialogue. I would like to know if you think I should take out the last line in the last page and leave it hanging on a cliff and if you think that more backstory should be given. FADE IN: EXT. CITY – SIDEWALK – DAY Footsteps on the sidewalk, keys in hand, DAVID, 20s, waiter, raps a song on the way to a sporty black car parked at the curb.

DAVID (V.O.) (rapping) Pass me that ‘gluck’ so I can get a buck, a mean frown stay on my face cuz I don’t give a fuck. Locked out in a ‘fro with a big fila coat 14 carat gold.

A step ahead of David, ASHLEY, 20s, waitress, gets in the passenger side of the black car.

DAVID (V.O.) (rapping) Smile and a bone around my throat. Gluck 19 tucked nicely down my fruit of the looms for them niggas that trick it in. I’m sticking up them tracks they boom.

INT. BLACK CAR David turns the ignition key and same rap song blasts on.

DAVID (V.O.) Shaking like a mothe fucka when I lock you down tight in tha chevy trunk with nothing but next to dig for yo life. Fool it ain’t no game the devil sent me Six in yo chest. Who’s next? no niceness in me. Tha killa’s up in my crew.

ASHLEY We’re late again.

EXT. BLACK CAR – CITY STREETS Follow black car zig zag on city traffic blasting rap song.

DAVID (O.S Fool it ain’t no game the devil sent me Six in yo chest. Who’s next? no niceness in me. Tha killa’s up in my crew.

MARIO’S RESTAURANT PARKING The black car pulls into Don Mario’s restaurant parking lot.

INT. BLACK CAR The engine and the rap song turn off. David takes a gun tucked under his belt and sticks it in the glove compartment.

ASHLEY You promised, David!

DAVID You never know when you’re going to need it.

EXT. DON MARIO’S PARKING LOT Ashley hurries inside. David lags behind. DAVID (V.O.) (rapping) I take no shit. Niggas you better run. We bout it bitch. No nigga dont play. We roll with automatics. Set up with the hoe shit. Nigga we gotta close shop. Juice on the bugler do a 9 leaving you hoes to rot. Big cam with a punk. Malekie with a attitude Smith and Wesson in his hand. Blow tha bitch out his shoes.


INT. RESTAURANT- NIGHT Lively Latin Restaurant PATRONS at linen tables.

WAITERS walk to and fro tables, kitchen, and bar.

Ashley, Hostess, leads a couple to their booth: SEAN, flashy with heavy gold cross, gold watch, holds NERY’s hand, 20s, in minidress.

SEAN’S BOOTH Sean and Nery sitting across from each other. NERY You promised! Sean takes the cloth napkin and slams it on the table.

SEAN C’mon baby!

David walks towards the table, pad in hand. Sean scurries next to Nery, puts his arm around her and whispers in her ear. She gives him a naughty smile and giggles taking his hand away from her crotch when she sees the waiter coming.

DAVID Good evening. Welcome. My name is David. I’ll be your server tonight. May I get you started with something to drink.

SEAN Yea, get me a 40 ounce. Nery nudges him in the ribs. NERY Sean… they don’t have that here.

DAVID We have wine by the glass and bottle; national and imported beers, draft, mixed drinks… If you need a minute to decide I’ll be right back. SEAN No, we don’t need no time. Baby, what you wanna drink?

NERY I’ll have a mimosa. DAVID What about you, sir? SEAN What about….you know… NERY Oh yea, right. Ginger ale please.

SEAN Bring me an IPA.

DAVID Would you like more time to order? SEAN I’ll have the palomilla steak with plantains and moros.

NERY The shrimp cocktail for me please. David takes note. DAVID Ok, any thing else…Can I have your menus please? Sean hands the menus to David.

FREEZE SHOT – MEMORY FLASH – A SCORPION TATTOO ON SEAN’S ARM. DAVID (CONT’D) (stutters) Thanks… Sean notices David’s nervousness. SEAN What’s wrong with that guy?

INT. BATHROOM. NIGHT David leans against the wall, closes his eyes, breathes heavily.

DAVID Motha fucka…

He splashes water on his face, looks in the mirror, puts his finger down his shirt and rubs a spot on his sternum. Sean walks in. He stops and he and David size each other up. Beat. David holds himself back and exits.


David spots DANNY, 40’s waiter, on his way to a table, and catches up with him.

DAVID Danny man, you gotta cover for me. I’m sick.

DANNY So am I, bro. Sick of covering for your sorry ass.

DAVID Thanks man, I owe you big time.

INT. CASHIER’S COUNTER – NIGHT Ashley enters data on the PC. David whispers in her ear. DAVID (whispering) Look at table 5.

ASHLEY Who is it? Ashley looks towards Sean’s table. A waiter comes with bills and credit cards.

ASHLEY (V.O.)(CONT’D) Your dream came true, now what? Ashley turns back looking for David but he’s gone.

INT. SEAN’S BOOTH Sean looks around nervously. He chugs his beer. Nery notices his nervousness.

SEAN We gotta go babe.

Nery sips her drink.

NERY Why, we just got here, I’m hungry.

SEAN Something came up, we gotta go.

NERY It’s her isn’t it!? NERY (CONT’D) That’s it! I’m done with you! SEAN Calm down, we can go someplace else to talk, I promise.

NERY You promise? Give me a break! I’m done with you, take your promises and shove them you know where, Sean, it’s Nery storms from the booth towards the front door exit.

INT. BLACK CAR David takes the gun and tucks it under his belt. His cell lights up with Ashley’s face. He turns it off.

INT. CASHIER’S DESK On her cell, Ashley turns her back to the counter.

ASHLEY He found him, or the other way around. I don’t know what he’s going to do. A waiter at the cash register insists.

WAITER (V.O.) Hey Ashley, I need that change, please.

INT. RESTAURANT – FRONT DOOR Sean catches up with Nery at the door and pulls her forcibly. Nery slaps him in the face.

NERY Let go! Restaurant waiter and patrons notice the wrangle.

SEAN Let’s get in the car!

The MANAGER, approaches them with the bill.

Nery shakes off Sean’s grip and walks out.

NERY (V.O.) I’ll find my own way home.

Sean pulls out a bill from his wallet and hands it to the manager. SEAN Keep the change.

EXT. RESTAURANT PARKING – NIGHT David ducks in his car watching the restaurant’s entrance.

Nery heads to the street on the phone. Sean gets in his BMW and drives slowly. David follows the BMW.

EXT/INT – STREET – CAR – NIGHT Sean slows down to the same speed Nery walks. Nery stops and gets in the car. Sean looks through the rearview mirror and notices the black half a block behind his BMW. He speeds up through traffic.

EXT. MCDONALD’S DRIVE THRU – NIGHT Sean pulls into a McDonalds drive thru and checks the rearview. The black car drives past McDonalds.

INT. SEAN’S BMW Nery’s crying in the front seat. NERY The only reason I got in her is because I forgot my wallet.

SEAN Sorry about the restaurant, do you want some chicken nuggets, or not?

INT. BLACK CAR David parks in a lot next to McDonald’s and calls a number. 20s, JOEY’s face on the phone.

JOEY You’re all bark.

DAVID I need your car. Catch up with me. Let’s switch, he knows this car. I’m on 135th and Miller.

DAVID’S POV – SEAN’S CAR HEADS NORTH. JOEY I’m not far. Coming up.

EXT. CITY STREET – NIGHT David clicks off. The cell lights up Daryl’s face. DARYL Don’t do it, it’s not worth it.

DAVID Leave me alone, Daryl. I’ll do what I need to do.

INT. SEAN’S BMW Through rearview Sean spots the black car. He picks up speed, turns a corner and pulls up to a building.

SEAN I’ll talk to you tomorrow, ok?

NERY This is no life for a kid.

EXT. BUILDING VALET DRIVE THRU Nery slams the car door.

SEAN Call me! EXT. STREET CORNER David and Joey change cars.

INT. SEAN’S CAR Sean check rearview mirror. No black car. He sighs. Sean drives to the movie theatre and parks.

EXT. MOVIE THEATRE – BOX OFFICE – NIGHT Several size lines, Sean finds the shortest, and looks over his shoulder.

EXT. MOVIE THEATRE – SIDE ENTRANCE – David scurries from the parking to a side door, takes the stopper out and enters.

INT. MOVIE THEATRE KITCHEN The MANAGER, 30s woman, sees him and smiles. MANAGER What’s up D? You’re a bit early.

DAVID Hey Susie, catch you after the show. David takes a look at the pots and pans in the sink and grabs the company cap from a door under the sink.

INT. MOVIE THEATRE – COMMON COURT The ADMIN CLERK takes Sean’s ticket. Sean finds Hall entrance on the ticket stub and heads there.

David catches Sean’s back towards the Hall and follows.

Sean climbs to the top of the stairs. David climbs on the opposite side. Sean texts: “A f**n’ ghost is after me, can’t go home yet.” David crawls two rows behind Sean’s and sits behind Sean. Sean closes his eyes.

FLASHBACK – EXT. COMPLEX ENTRANCE – GATE – NIGHT Sean points gun on David’s chest. Back to scene. David points gun at Sean’s head.

FLASHBACK – EXT. COMPLEX ENTRANCE – GATE – Gun shot blast. David falls back in slow motion.


EXT. MOVIE THEATRE – PARKING A group of noisy teenagers walks to window. David walks down the sidewalk to his black car.

DAVID (V.O.) (rapping softly) Fool it ain’t no game the devil sent me Six in yo chest. Who’s next? no niceness in me. Tha killa’s up in my crew. Sean pulls out in his BMW. FADE OUT.

Ghost Writers must know the hero’s world

A writer must know, really know, the world the hero lives in from many different angles if it’s to recreate a deep character with layers of significance.  This complexity is what I love about a character.

Writers sometimes use poetry to warm up their creative juices for the day. Sometimes I do. I get in touch with my feelings and accept them or do away with them if I don’t want them and get right into the writing.  The vision comes more clearly to me that way when I am in a state of zen. I write what I live and live what I write.image003  The following is an expert from my book Sandcastles which I am reading and revising.

2015 Report-2016 Outlook

It has been more than a year since I embarked on this journey. There is the copyright of a first draft but the final draft needs to be finalised with the rewrite and edit. This work is pending the fulfilment of the contract.


To describe 2015 using the term ‘challenging’ does not do it justice. But God is good and I am starting 2016 with the knowing that the Universe supports my goals and I am fearless.

As an aspiring writer and filmmaker coming out of a difficult online Creative Writing MFA program in the fall of 2014, with no looming job in the horizon and tucked away in the boondocks, I relied only on Providence to see me through my darkest hour. It was the first time in 20 years that I did not have a teaching job and dared to follow my dreams of becoming an author and filmmaker.
